"All the things that bind us together and make life worth living - community, family, friendship - thrive on the one thing we never have enough of: time."

- In Praise of Slow, Carl Honoré, p. 9

"…orthopraxy requires orthodoxy. It is not simply the form of the practice that shapes Christian character - it is the understanding of it and the manner in which the form is practiced."

- Matthew Anderson, Earthen Vessels, p. 190

Text

In holding my beliefs loosely I hold onto a Christ who is gracious, loving, almighty, and the saviour in more ways than I know. I take refuge in the truth that Christ will always be more than my mind can comprehend.

"The key to the ultimate relevance and to the triumph of the good is not any calculation at all, paradoxical or otherwise, of efficacy, but rather simple obedience. Obedience means not keeping verbally enshrined rules but reflecting the character of the love of God. The cross is not a recipe for resurrection. Suffering is not a tool to make people come around, nor a good in itself. But the kind of faithfulness that is willing to accept evident defeat rather than complicity with evil is, by virtue of its conformity with what happens to God when he works among us, aligned with the ultimate triumph of the Lamb."

- Yoder, The Politics of Jesus, pp. 237-238

"The lamb that was slain is worthy to receive power!” John is here saying, not as an inscrutable paradox but as a meaningful affirmation, that the cross and not the sword, suffering and not brute power determines the meaning of history. The key to the obedience of God’s people is not their effectiveness but their patience (Rev 13:10)… The triumph of the right, although it is assured, is sure because of the power of the resurrection and not because of any calculation of causes and effects, nor because of the inherently greater strength of the good guys. The relationship between the obedience of God’s people and the triumph of God’s cause is not a relationship of cause and effect but one of cross and resurrection."

- John Howard Yoder, The Politics of Jesus, p. 232

"When we cling with white knuckles to our sins and our hostility, we’re like a tree that won’t let its leaves go. There can’t be a spring if we’re still stuck in the fall."

"This is what a well-guarded prayer life can reveal about us, that our trust is not in ourselves but in seeking God’s strength for what we do. Prayer is not a substitute for action, but prayer under girds action with the strength that makes the difference."

"People often say that, in a democracy, decisions are made by a majority of the people. Of course, that is not true. Decisions are made by a majority of those who make themselves heard and who vote - a very different thing."

- Walter H Judd
